Today the claim is made that that everything from surviving a car accident to the birth of a baby is a “miracle.” But a miracle by definition is not something that occurs by natural law—it is supernatural! In fact, miracles show the power of God over nature, man, the physical and the spiritual. Jesus showed this power on numerous occasions. Here are a few of them: (1) He made six pots of water become the best unfermented wine (John 2:1-11). This does not naturally occur today and cannot be duplicated. (2) He healed Peter’s mother-in-law when she had a fever (Luke 4:38,39). We can take a pain reliever and recover from a fever today, but no one can make it instantly go away like Jesus did. (3) He rebuked the winds and the sea and they were instantly calm (Mat. 8:23-27). We can only take shelter in stormy weather. (4) He fed over 5,000 people with only 5 loaves and 2 fish (Mat. 14:16-21). No one has ever done this since that time. (5) He brought a widow’s son to life (Luke 7:11-14). We have never experienced seeing a loved one come back to life today and we never will.
So, why did Jesus do these things? The inspired John has the answer, “And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name” (John 20:30,31). The five miracles listed are just an extremely small sampling of all the miraculous events He performed. John says the world could not contain all the books that would have to be written about all the works of our Lord (John 21:25). There are several more recorded miracles in the Bible which were written to produce faith. If miracles were still being performed today, we would not need the recorded miracles at all because we could witness them and have faith. Jesus performed miracles to confirm what Nicodemus admitted: “no man can do these miracles that thou doest except God be with him” (John 3:2). He fulfilled the will of God perfectly and wants all to believe on His great name through His Word (John 17:8).
